Questions, answered gently
There is a lot to think about when you are remembering someone. We have tried to answer the questions that come up most often, in plain language and with care.

Getting started
How do I create an online memorial?
It takes just a few minutes. You add the person's name, the dates that matter, a photo, and a few words about who they were. We'll give you a private invite code you can share with the people who loved them. There is no rush, no template to fill perfectly — just space for the story to begin.
How much does it cost? Is there a free option?
Every memorial starts with a free 90-day trial, so you can gather memories and see how it feels before committing. When you are ready, one payment of €49 keeps the memorial online forever — no subscription, no renewal dates, no surprise charges. It includes 5 GB of storage and room for up to 25 circle members.
Do I need technical skills?
Not at all. We built A Place to Return.to to feel as simple as a photo album or a quiet note to a friend. If you can write an email or add a photo to a message, you can build a beautiful memorial here.
Writing and sharing
What should I write in a tribute?
Whatever feels true. A sentence about their laugh, a story only you know, a recipe they never wrote down, the way they made coffee too strong. There is no right length. The best tributes are the ones that sound like them, not like a formal biography.
Can family and friends add memories too?
Yes, that is the heart of it. Once you invite someone, they can add their own photos, stories, voice notes, and small gestures. The memorial becomes a shared place, not a solo project — a little fuller every time someone visits.
Can I write in my own language?
Yes. The platform is available in English, Nederlands, Deutsch, and Español, and you can write the memorial itself in any language you like. The memories belong to your family, in your words.
Privacy and access
Is it private, or can anyone see it?
Memorials are private by default. Only people with the invite code can view or contribute. You control who is invited and you can remove someone at any time. It is not indexed by search engines and it is not a public social network.
How do invite codes work?
Each memorial gets a unique, private code. Share it through WhatsApp, SMS, email, or simply read it out loud. The person enters the code, creates an account, and they are in. No public links, no unexpected guests.
Can I remove or revoke someone's access?
Yes. In the memorial settings you can see every invited person and their status. If someone should no longer have access, one tap revokes it. You stay in control of the circle.
Photos, video, and voice
Can I upload photos, videos, and voice notes?
Yes. You can add photos, video clips, written memories, and voice recordings. The free trial includes up to 200 MB of uploads; a paid memorial includes 5 GB. Everything is backed up securely and stays with the memorial.
Can I share the memorial with people who are not tech-savvy?
Yes. The page is designed to be readable without zooming, with clear buttons and a calm layout. If someone can open a link on a phone, they can visit the memorial. You can also place a QR code on a funeral card, headstone, or urn so they can scan and arrive instantly.
Can I print a QR code for a headstone or funeral card?
Yes. Every memorial has a QR code you can download and print. It links directly to the memorial page. We offer PNG and PDF formats, and you can choose a warmer, more personal scan-landing page so the first thing someone sees feels gentle and human.
Keeping it safe, forever
How long will the memorial stay online?
Paid memorials are kept for as long as they exist — that is the promise. Free trials last 90 days and are gently archived if not upgraded. Even then, nothing is deleted immediately; the memorial waits for 12 months before permanent removal, and we will email you well ahead of time.
What happens if I stop paying or miss a payment?
Because it is a single one-time payment of €49, there is nothing to miss. Once paid, the memorial is secured forever. If you ever request a refund within 30 days, the memorial is archived and you can still return to it later if you choose to upgrade again.
Is my data and the person's memory safe?
We treat it with the same care we would want for our own families. Your data is stored in the European Union, encrypted in transit and at rest. We never sell data, never show ads, and never use your memories to train AI. You can ask us to delete anything at any time.
Who owns the content?
The creator of the memorial manages the page and its settings. Each member owns the memories they contributed. If a member leaves, they can take their own contributions with them. The person being remembered is honored here, but their digital memory is stewarded by the people who loved them.
Making it meaningful
Can I add life milestones, not just memories?
Yes. We have a separate 'Their life' timeline where you can add milestones — birth, graduation, a wedding, a move, the birth of a child, the day they died, and anything in between. It helps tell the full shape of a life, not only the final chapter.
Can people leave small gestures without writing?
Yes. We offer tribute actions — light a candle, lay a flower, leave a stone, a heart, incense, or a prayer. These appear on the memorial for a day or a week, depending on the gesture. It is a small, quiet way to say 'I am here' without needing to find the words.
Ready to begin?
There is no hurry. Create a memorial when you feel ready, and invite the people who should be there.
